CELEBRATING ARTS, CULTURE, AND COMMUNITY

Oakland First Fridays began as a spontaneous street festival in 2012, and has since has become a Bay Area phenomenon. Every month five blocks of Telegraph Avenue are closed to traffic, and up to 30,000 people come downtown for art, performance and food to celebrate Oakland’s diversity and creativity. It’s an incubator for artists and businesses and a driver of Oakland’s economy.

Since 2013, it’s been produced by the nonprofit Koreatown Northgate Community Benefit District (KONO).

It’s a free event and relies heavily on sponsors and donors to keep the magic happening.

- Landy G. (via Instagram)

From Vendors

"First Fridays is a launching pad. [..] I've gotten hundreds if not, thousands of eyeballs on my business that I would not have had could it not be for First Friday"

-Jerry of Ayaba Wines

"As a vendor I have made enough money in one night to pay my rent! I love the huge crowd it brings each month, diverse group of people, the different talented performing artists and vendors!"

-Anonymous via Oakland First Fridays Vendor Survey, 2018

"Being able to come and showcase whether it's their talent, their food, their space on a consistent basis in the heart of Oakland, makes it [First Friday] a unique venue. But really I think what people come to Oakland to celebrate is the culture and I believe First Friday sums that up in a one stop shop.

-Justin Ford of Oakland's Own

From Brick and Mortar Businesses in KONO

"I find it super helpful to my business to be open longer hours for first Fridays. I usual triple/quadruple my sales during first Friday thanks to the heavy foot traffic".
